Speaking books by SADAG

"Imagine looking at this article and only understanding the images. Being illiterate limits the information you can access, and in Africa, one in five people cannot read. Enter Speaking Books, an inventive health tool that was recognised with a United Nations prize for information and communication technology in May. Praised as a world first, each 16-page book relays essential health-related information on a variety of topics, ranging from malaria and tuberculosis to HIV and Aids. Conceptualised by local NGO South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), the free books are clearly worded with culturally relevant illustrations and a soundtrack of the text in various languages, including Zulu, Mandarin and Hindi. According to SADAG founder Zane Wilson, 27 people "read" each title and of these, 97 percent requested more books. Celebrity Cook Book

IN THE MOOD WITH “GOOD MOOD FOOD”
Charities Challenge Tough Times

What do Danny K, Colin Moss, Loyiso Bala, Jonathan Zapiro, Kerry McGregor, Arno Carstens, Baby Jake Matlala and Zuraida Jardine have in common?

They are some of South Africa’s favorite celebrities who have contributed to the zaniest cook book ever.

Fifty nine top celebrities have joined forces to share their cooking skills, or non-skills, as well as their personal secrets to mood upliftment. It’s all in aid of mental health and was the brainchild of Zane Wilson, founder of the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG).

SADAG has grown to become the leading advocacy NGO for mental health in South Africa with an impressive support network for depression and anxiety disorders, including the only programme of its kind aimed at the prevention of teen suicide. Proceeds from the sale of the celebrity cook book will enable SADAG to expand on its much needed services. Photographer, Nick Voutsas and the celebrities involved have pulled out all the stops to make this project a resounding success.

Apart from some brilliant recipes, every page of “Good Mood Food” is a tongue in cheek portrayal of celebrities in unlikely situations.

With personal happiness as the central theme, the superb photography is somewhat off-the-wall, such as that featuring Derek Watts in a fridge, wrapped in plastic! You will have to buy the book to find out why.

Considering the contributions from the likes of Barry Hilton, David Kau, Ruda Landman, Bill Flynn, Heinz Winkler, Hugh Masekela and Gwen Gill, this is more than a cookbook. It’s a rollicking ride through the tastes and passions of South Africa’s favorite famous people and it’s really fun.

Retailing at just R95, it’s a steal and an ideal Christmas present for just about anyone. Available in bookstores, Pick n Pay, Woolworths, countrywide or direct from SADAG on www.anxiety.org.za or phone your order to 011 783 1474

For further information contact: Zane Wilson at SADAG Telephone 011 262 6396.
