It can be scary when someone you love is sick. It can be especially scary if they’re diagnosed with a mental illness. It’s hard to see someone you love in pain and it’s confusing when someone you know well is not acting like themselves. You know how you would take care of them if they had a cold or flu, but what do you do for a mental illness? Like any other health problem, someone with a mental illness needs extra love and support, but so does the person supporting a loved one with a mental health problem. “Family members need their space as well for care, upliftment and encouragement” says Support Group Leader Yolande Geyser.

Research shows that Support Groups can help people cope with and recover from a wide variety of problems. They can help you deal with a mental illness diagnosis, are able to provide information on the illness and ways to treat and manage it.

Those supporting loved ones with a mental illness need support too. “A supportive family lifestyle system is crucial in the maintenance of mental illness” says Yolande Geyser. This Support Group is specifically aimed at families and loved ones with a loved one who has a mental illness. The Support Group will allow parents, partners, siblings or friends the opportunity to form connections with other people experiencing similar troubles and to learn from one another in a non-judgmental and confidential atmosphere.

Support Groups discuss effective ways of managing symptoms, self-help tips and how to help a loved one with a mental health problem. In light of this, SADAG would like to invite family members and loved ones to attend the new FREE Family Support Group hosted by Support Group Leader Yolande Geyser.
