Support Groups can help to bridge the gap that exists between treatment of mental illnesses and counselling. This is especially helpful in communities with little or no resources for Mental Health services. It can also be beneficial even in the private sector where the cost of healthcare is extremely high and meetings with the psychiatrist and/or psychologist are few and far between. Support Groups do not replace such appointments but they provide an important platform for connecting and sharing experiences with people in similar situations.
Support Group Leaders play an important role in assisting those living with Mental Health issues to manage the symptoms, understand what to expect from treatment and be able to give practical self-help tips. Support Groups can offer people living with Depression, Anxiety, Stress, Trauma and other mental illnesses, a place of warmth, understanding and support.
These benefits can be extended to their friends and family members by providing them with helpful tips on how to assist their loved ones and how to recognise the signs and symptoms of the various mental illnesses.
SADAG provides training, information, materials, guest speakers and practical guidelines for anyone interested in running Mental Health Support Groups. SADAG will also continuously promote the Support Group meetings via social media, the monthly e-newsletter, SMS-system and being listed in the SADAG Referral Guides. SADAG will also render to the Support Group members free telephonic counselling and referrals, as required.
Most of the Netcare/SADAG support groups have started again in January 2017 whilst others will only recommence in February 2017.
