The Depression and Anxiety Support Group is a not-for-profit organisation established to :

v Educate patients, families, mental health professional, and the general public concerning the nature and management of depressive and anxiety illnesses as treatable medical diseases.

v Foster self-help for patients and families.

v Eliminate discrimination and stigma.

v Improve access to care.

v Advocate for research toward the elimination of these illnesses.

These goals are carried out through :

v A network of 75 support groups throughout South Africa.

v Partnerships with the public, schools, universities and prisons.

v Educational materials, video tapes and publications on these disorders, including a quartely newsletter.

v Media outreach, including articles in print and electronic media.

v Advocacy, serving as a voice for the more than 10% of South Africans who suffer from depressive disorders each year.

This undertaking is accomplished by :

v Workshops and educational programmes countrywide.

v A full-time professional staff of 5, headquartered in Sandton, Johannesburg.

v An 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. information line with free phone access, including Saturdays.

v A web site which can be visited via the internet at

v A referral service to experts and free services.

Our members are :

v People who have experienced depression or anxiety, their family and friends.

v Health care professionals, psychiatrists, doctors, social workers and psychiatric nurses, who care for people with depressive disorders.

v The general public.
