Move for Mental Health

From 5–11 April 2026, Dr Gwen Hobson will take on the Marathon des Sables, a 267km ultramarathon across the Sahara Desert in Morocco.

Through the X the Stress campaign, Gwen is using this challenge to raise awareness about the important connection between physical activity and Mental Health, while also raising funds for the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG).

You can support this initiative by joining the X the Stress Virtual Challenge and moving alongside her during April 2026.

About the Race

The Marathon des Sables is known as one of the toughest foot races in the world.
During the race, runners will cover approximately 267km across the Sahara Desert over six stages. Competitors face extreme heat, sand dunes, rocky terrain, and long distances.
It is also a self-supported race, meaning runners must carry their own food, clothing, and equipment for the duration of the race, with water provided at checkpoints.
Gwen is taking on this challenge to help spark conversations about Mental Health and encourage people to experience the benefits that movement can have on wellbeing.

How the Virtual Challenge Works

The X the Stress Virtual Challenge
https://www.energylabrunning.com/x_the_stress - will run from 1–30 April 2026.

Anyone can take part from anywhere by choosing a challenge that suits their fitness level.

You can either:
  • Complete the full 267km distance, matching Gwen’s desert run, or
  • Set a personal distance goal using the event’s handicap system.
You can take part by walking, running, cycling, swimming, or any activity that gets you moving.

After registering, you will receive instructions on how to link your fitness watch (Suunto, Garmin or Polar) or Strava account to the Energy Lab platform so the distance you cover can be tracked.

Once your challenge is complete, you will receive a downloadable digital certificate in your Energy Lab profile.

Why Movement Matters

Movement plays an important role in supporting Mental Health and well-being.

Regular physical activity can help reduce stress, improve mood, build confidence, and support overall Mental Health. Even small, consistent amounts of movement can make a meaningful difference.

Through this challenge, the goal is simple: encourage people to move more while raising awareness about Mental Health.
