SADAG needs your help to cover costs of our Toll-Free Suicide Helpline

 SADAG Christmas Banner 2022

For many, the festive season is a time to unwind and celebrate, but it is also a period that brings undue financial stress and family issues to the surface, leading to an increase in Anxiety, Depression, Loneliness, and Domestic Violence fuelled by alcohol. These issues, and more, can lead to an increase in the rate of Suicide. This is why The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) runs its toll-free helplines 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout December, including Christmas Day and New Year to help the thousands of people who need support, counselling and crisis intervention during this difficult time.

Such support is made possible by over 250 dedicated volunteers and the generous donations of kind individuals, patients, and corporate donors.

Among other costs, these donations are critical to helping pay for the telephone bill which SADAG covers for all the calls that come through our toll-free Suicide Helpline. We are facing high call volumes brought on by financial stress caused by Inflation, Unemployment, Depression, Anxiety and Trauma, and so many people who feel like it is all just too much. Our service is a critical intervention that is constantly needed due to the shortage of Mental Health resources in the country, and with over 3 000 calls per day, the demand for our services is growing each month.

“The call I got from xxxx was exactly what I needed and the talk we had left me feeling so positive, and want to do more than I have thought possible for a long time. It was really a pleasure to receive a follow up, was given numbers to call for all the type of help I need. I really wish I could bless the organization as a whole with love, kindness and all the support needed to sustain this program, a lot of people will get help.”

“Thank you. I phoned the number 0800 567 567 today feeling very overwhelmed and the counsellor saved my life.”

“Being on a call with her was therapeutic and it actually changed my mood , after a long time of not being happy. I was able to smile and laugh today. Thanks for the amazing service.”
